"He knew where the strike zone was and he stayed there, that's what Lackey does best." Lackey (3-1) tossed seven innings and allowed a single run on a Brandon Wood homer, walked two and struck out four to best his former mates for whom he spent the first eight years of his career rewriting the franchise pitching annals. "It was different facing the jersey I guess...but there's not a whole lot of guys in that lineup that I played an extended period of time with," said Lackey. David Ortiz, who came in batting .149 with a lowly .240 on-base percentage, homered and registered two hits with a walk for the Red Sox, who have won six of nine. Adrian Beltre had three hits, two RBI and also hit a solo home run, his second of the year. Daniel Bard and Jonathan Papelbon fired spotless frames of relief to preserve Lackey's outing. Papelbon came away with his eighth save for the effort. Joel Pineiro (2-4) reached a season-high 117 pitches in an improved six-inning start for LA. The veteran righty was hammered by Detroit for 10 runs and 10 hits in just 3 1/3 innings his last time out, but held the Sox to a pair of runs on eight hits Wednesday despite losing his third consecutive start. Heading to the hill for the second time this season tonight for the Red Sox will be right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka. The Japanese hurler, who had opened the year on the disabled list with a neck strain, was roughed up by the Baltimore Orioles in his debut on Saturday, as he allowed seven runs (six earned) and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings. Matsuzaka pitched six scoreless innings for a win in his only start against the Angels last year and is 1-1 with a 4.91 lifetime ERA in two starts against them. Los Angeles, meanwhile, will counter with lefty Scott Kazmir, who is 2-1 with a 5.57 ERA. Kazmir did not get a decision on Saturday in Detroit, despite his best effort of the season. He surrendered one earned run and five hits in six innings of that one, but his team dropped a 3-2 decision. Kazmir has faced the Red Sox 23 times and is 8-7 with a 3.59 ERA. On the milestone watch, Angels outfielder Hideki Matsui is one RBI from 1,500 for his professional career. Of course, his first 889 runs driven in were in Japan. Matsui, though, is 3-for-28 with eight strikeouts in his last eight games. The Angels won five of their nine regular season meetings with the Red Sox last season before sweeping them in three games during the American League Division Series.

To do this you must pay close attention to the philosophies head coaches employ in exhibition play. “You need to know what a coach is trying to accomplish,” says Covers Expert Bryan Leonard. “Sometimes a new coach will want to instill a winning attitude. Others just want to make sure their starters don’t get hurt." So how do you distinguish who’s playing scared and who’s playing for keeps? “Head coaches on the hot seat or new coaches trying to implement a winning attitude usually try harder to win in the preseason,” Merril says. Cleveland Browns head coach Romeo Crennel fits this criteria. He’s entering his third season as the sideline boss and has yet to lead the Browns to more than six wins. Cleveland is an enticing bet as well because of the unresolved quarterback situation. General manager Phil Savage sacrificed the Browns’ first-round pick in next year’s draft for Brady Quinn, but the former Notre Dame quarterback hasn’t signed or reported to training camp yet. Charlie Frye and Derek Anderson split time at QB last season and it looks like either player (or even Quinn) could be the opening-day starter. “If a team has quarterback depth and the pecking order hasn’t been decided, it’s a big advantage,” Leonard says. Even in the third week of the preseason when starters generally play the most, the final outcome of the game is in the hands of fringe players. A team's talent, all the way down to the last man on the roster, is something to consider. The New England Patriots have long been considered one of the deeper teams in the NFL and coach Bill Belichick has said in the past he’s unafraid of stars getting hurt in games with nothing on the line. He shocked his colleagues in 2003 by playing some of his starters on special teams in the preseason. “We want to have the team ready to play a tough, physical game and preparation has to go into that and I imagine a certain amount of injuries go with it,” Belichick told the Providence Journal in August 2003. Bettors can only hope to find more teams that share the Pats' business-like approach to the preseason (New England is 17-9-3 against the spread since 2000) and take advantage of teams who detest the exhibition schedule.
