Canadiens try to lock up playoff spot versus Hurricanes

Hockey Betting Lines

04/08/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Montreal Canadiens will try to wrap up a playoff spot tonight when they visit the Carolina Hurricanes for a clash at RBC Center.

The Canadiens are currently sixth in the East and can officially punch their ticket to the postseason by gaining a point in tonight's road test. Montreal, which will complete its regular season Saturday against visiting Toronto, is just one point ahead of Philadelphia for the conference's sixth spot.

The Habs are aiming for their third straight playoff appearance.

Montreal had won two straight prior to dropping a shootout decision Tuesday night against the host New York Islanders. Frans Nielsen tied the game late in the third period and Matt Moulson scored the clinching shootout goal to push the Islanders past the Habs 4-3, at Nassau Coliseum.

Tomas Plekanec, Brian Gionta and Maxim Lapierre scored for the Canadiens. Jaroslav Halak picked up 39 saves in defeat after posting shutouts in his previous two outings.

"It would have been nice to win, but it is what it is right now," said Gionta. "We put ourselves in this situation. We just have to focus on the last two games."

Habs defenseman Jaroslav Spacek missed his third straight game with flu-like symptoms, but could return tonight.

Montreal is 19-16-5 on the road and has lost three of its last four games as the guest.

The Hurricanes, meanwhile, have been eliminated from playoff contention, but that didn't stop them from turning in an offensive showcase Tuesday in Tampa. Eric Staal posted two goals and two assists as Carolina notched a season-best for goals in one game by topping the Lightning, 8-5, at St. Pete Times Forum.

Rod Brind'Amour and Drayson Bowman also picked up a pair of goals apiece while Chad LaRose added a goal and two helpers for the Hurricanes, who snapped a two-game slide.

Cam Ward picked up the win in relief, stopping 24-of-26 shots over 34-plus minutes. Manny Legace started but left due to an undisclosed injury after allowing two goals on 11 shots.

"It was an unusual game. We came out way more sharp and focused than we have been, and put a lot of pucks to the net," said Carolina head coach Paul Maurice of the high-octane affair. "I'm pleased that we were able to execute and when you bring that kind of emotion to a hockey game, good things happen."

Tonight marks the final home game of the season for the 'Canes, who are 20-17-3 as the host this year. Carolina will close its campaign Saturday in Boston.

The Habs won the first two meetings with Carolina this year, but the Hurricanes notched a 2-1 win when the teams met in Montreal on March 31. Carolina has taken five of eight overall in the series, but the Canadiens have won three of their last five in Raleigh.

Matt Kenseth And Kevin Harvick Favorites To Take NASCAR Nextel Cup Championship

(September 15)—The NASCAR season has hit the homestretch with the opening event on this year’s Chase for the Cup taking place this weekend at the Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire International Speedway. With 10 races remaining to determine the Cup Series champion, leading online sportsbook MySportsbook.com today announced odds on all 10 Chase qualifying drivers capturing the NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship.

One of the largest sportsbook sites on the Internet, MySportsbook.com currently lists the top two drivers in the point standings as the early favorites to win the Nextel Cup. Entering the Chase for the Cup with a slim five-point lead in the point standings, 2003 NASCAR champ Matt Kenseth has been made a slight favorite to win his second Cup at 7/2 betting odds. 2001 Cup Rookie of the Year Kevin Harvick has betting odds listed at 5/2 and four-time NASCAR champion Jeff Gordon is listed at 6/1 to capture the Nextel Cup this year.

Hoping to follow in the footsteps of his legendary father who won six NASCAR titles, Dale Earnhardt Jr. stands at 8/1 to breakthrough with his first Cup victory. Staying with the family theme, MySportsbook.com lists 2005 Rookie of the Year Kyle Busch at 14/1 to succeed big brother Kurt’s 2004 NASCAR title. While Kasey Kahne was the final driver to qualify for the Chase with a third place finish last week, the oddsmakers give him a fighting chance at 10/1 mainly due to several mile-and-a-half tracks remaining on the schedule. Despite going winless on the NASCAR circuit this season, Jeff Burton enters the Chase at 5/1 to capture the Cup title. Meanwhile, rookie Denny Hamlin is 4/1 to win the championship, while veteran driver Mark Martin enters the Chase for the Cup as a 15/1 long shot to win his first NASCAR title in his 24th and final season.

MySportsbook.com will offer comprehensive Nascar betting lines on every race remaining on the Nextel Cup series including driver match-ups, props and odds to win each race. For a complete list of NASCAR odds, please visit www.MySportsbook.com.
