Freedom downs Independence to take over second place
Soccer Betting Lines
05/31/2010 -
Boyds, MD (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - First-half goals from Rebecca Moros and Abby
Wambach propelled the Washington Freedom to a 2-1 win over the Philadelphia
Independence on Sunday, lifting the Freedom into second place in the Women's
Professional Soccer standings.
Moros scored her first goal of the season in the 25th minute before a penalty
kick from Wambach nine minutes later doubled the lead before halftime.
Philadelphia was unable to reply until stoppage time when Lianne Sanderson
grabbed a late consolation goal to give her two on the campaign.
Washington lost two of its first three games to start the season but has gone
unbeaten in its last five matches, moving the club to within two points of
first-place FC Gold Pride.
The Independence has now lost two of its last three games to fall to third,
two points back of Washington.
Moros created the first goal when she got forward on the right and worked a
one-two with Christie Welsh. She took the return pass inside the area behind
the Philadelphia defense and drove the ball off the far post and into the net.
Sonia Bompastor drew a penalty kick nine minutes later when she beat defender
Sara Larsson and was tripped as she entered the penalty area.
And Wambach kept her nerve from the spot, sending goalkeeper Val Henderson the
wrong way for her third goal of the season.
The Independence had trouble breaking down the Freedom defense, and Caroline
Seger received a red card in the 87th minute for a foul on Washington's Sarah
Huffman, while Sanderson managed to pull a goal back late for the visitors.
Washington will have a chance to take over first place next week when they
meet leaders FC Gold Pride, and head coach Jim Gabarra feels that his team is
up for the task.
"It will be a huge challenge for us going out to play FC Gold Pride next
week," Gabarra told the league's website. "It will be tough on our defense,
but I think we played well in the back this week. Hopefully we can build on
that."
Gold Pride is just two points clear of the Freedom because they had their
five-game winning streak snapped on Saturday in a 1-0 defeat by the Chicago
Red Stars, who got the game's only goal in the 56th minute through Kosovare
Asllani.
The other match on Saturday saw the Boston Breakers play to their fourth draw
in seven games as they finished 0-0 with Sky Blue FC.
There were only three games this past weekend because Saint Louis Athletica's
franchise folded on Thursday, forcing the league to change its schedule for
the rest of the season.
