Celtics open trek in New Orleans
Basketball Betting Lines
02/10/2010 -
(Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Boston Celtics kick off a five-game western road trip
tonight, when they pay a visit to the New Orleans Hornets in the Big Easy.
The Atlantic Division-leading Celtics will also take on the Kings, Lakers,
Blazers and Nuggets, and are 17-8 away from Beantown this season.
Boston had a three-game winning streak stopped in Sunday's 96-89 setback
versus the Orlando Magic at TD Garden despite Rajon Rondo falling just shy of
a triple-double with a team-high 17 points, nine assists and eight rebounds.
Paul Pierce returned from a foot injury to post 13 points, while Kevin Garnett
added 13 and nine rebounds for the Celtics, who were outscored 36-11 in the
third quarter. Pierce is questionable for tonight's game.
"It's unpleasant, we don't like that at all," Garnett said. "Our goal is to
establish home court and try to add that as an advantage and we really haven't
done that consistently, at least against good teams. That's something we've
got to get better at going into the break and second half."
Ray Allen finished with 14 points in a losing effort. Allen (20,444 pts) is
closing in on Mitch Richmond (20,497 pts) for 31st on the NBA's all-time
scoring list.
New Orleans hopes to put the brakes on a four-game home losing streak when it
kicks off a four-game residency tonight versus the Celtics. The Hornets will
also play host to Utah, Indiana and Houston, and are 16-8 at New Orleans Arena
this season.
The Hornets haven't been playing so hot lately, as they suffered their fourth
loss in five tries with Monday's 123-117 setback at Orlando. Magic veteran
Vince Carter scored 34 of his season-high 48 points in the second half, while
Peja Stojakovic scored 29 points and pulled down nine rebounds in defeat.
"We were expecting them to come out with their full effort and intensity and
that's what they did," Hornets coach Jeff Bower said. "They made their run at
us and it was a strong performance by Vince Carter to put them in this
position."
David West and Darren Collison both netted 27 points for New Orleans, which is
still within striking distance of the final postseason spot in the Western
Conference standings. The rookie Collison has done a fine job in place of
injured All-Star Chris Paul, and is averaging nearly 16 points as a starter.
The Celtics beat New Orleans, 97-87, at home on November 1 this season thanks
to 27 points from Pierce. Boston has won four straight after losing the last
three meetings with the Hornets.
Boston has lost nine of its last 15 trips to the bayou.

Marlins could start season without No. 2 starter Johnson
JUPITER, Fla. -- The Foorida Marlins are preparing for the likelihood that right-hander
Josh Johnson won't be ready when the season starts April 2.
Grapefruit League action starts Wednesday, but Johnson, penciled in as the No. 2 starter, hasn't even thrown off a mound at full speed since September. He's experienced some soreness in his right forearm.
MySportsbook.com have the Marlins listed with baseball betting lines at +800 to win the NL East this season .
''You guys know the math. If he's not on the hill then he becomes an opening day roster issue,'' manager Fredi Gonzalez said Saturday. ''We're borderline now.''
Johnson, who finished 12-7 with a 3.10 ERA in 2007, was supposed to throw on flat ground Saturday. That was canceled when he woke up with pain.
He played catch on Wednesday with no pain but felt discomfort in a throwing session on Thursday. He's expected to try again Sunday.
''Like we always said from the very beginning, we're going to take it easy on him,'' Gonzalez said. ''He didn't feel right, so we shut him down. We're going to take it back to step one and see where we're at.''
Among the candidates to take Johnson's spot in the rotation are left-hander Chris George and right-handers Yusmeiro Petit and Jose Garcia.
Right-hander Sergio Mitre, who missed most of last season with arm and shoulder problems, also is behind.
With Johnson's status doubtful, Gonzalez said right-hander Ricky Nolasco will stay in the rotation and no longer will be considered a candidate for closer.
